We Keep Pushing Deeper Into This Alabama Cave

Come along as Jason, myself, Robby, and Leanne head back into our project cave in Jackson County, Alabama for another day of surveying!

We pick up right where we left off on the previous trip at Station A52 and continue working our way deeper into the cave. Not long into the survey, we encounter an unexpected low, wet crawl that stretches for more than 100 feet. Had we known what was ahead, we probably would have dressed a little warmer for the day! Oh well.

Once through the low and wet section, the cave opens up into a tall, walking-size canyon passage with a stream running through it. We had heard there was a “blind pit” somewhere ahead, so we continued surveying toward the next known pit. We reached the pit, completed the survey down it, and then backtracked to check out that supposed blind pit.

And that's when things got interesting...

The “blind pit” wasn't actually blind at all! It connects into the main pit, but it serves as a route for the main stream passage when water is flowing through the cave. Fortunately, the passage was dry on this trip, giving us the perfect opportunity to survey it.

After getting the survey work finished, we headed back out. But on the way through the squeezy section, I made the exact mistake I had warned everyone else about earlier in the trip. At the spot where I had reminded everyone to be careful not to drop their packs...

Yep. I dropped mine. 🤦‍♀️

Thankfully, Robby was a good friend and went back in to retrieve it for me. Whew!

By the end of the trip, we had set an incredible 49 survey stations, pushing the cave to 1,854.4 feet of surveyed passage and 224.5 feet deep.

And we're nowhere near finished. We still expect this cave to eventually reach more than 400 feet deep into the mountain, so there is a LOT more surveying ahead.

Every trip continues to reveal new passage, new connections, and a better understanding of this incredible cave system. Come along for the next part of the survey and see how deep we can take it!
