We Explored a Vandalized Historic Saltpeter Cave with Hidden Beauty

Join me, Jason, our new friend Lindsay, and our good friends Kevin, Jamy, and Brody as we head to northeast Alabama to explore a cave near Arab with a fascinating and long history of human use and abuse.

Our first stop is a cave once mined for saltpeter during the late 1800s. Listed at just over a mile long, we knew very little about it before arriving. Armed with nothing more than a map, we hiked across an open field in search of the entrance.

After enjoying the refreshing blast of cool cave air, we stepped inside only to be greeted by spray paint covering the entrance, a disappointing reminder of how easily these fragile places can be damaged. Fortunately, as we ventured deeper, the cave rewarded us with beautiful formations that were well worth stopping to photograph.

We continued all the way to the back of the cave where Kevin and Brody gave it their best effort trying to push beyond the known passage. Although we could feel airflow, there was no passable route forward.

On our way back, we explored the historic saltpeter mining passages. It was incredible to see hundreds of signatures left behind by visitors over the decades, along with pick marks carved into the rock by miners more than 150 years ago, a fascinating glimpse into the cave's past.

Before leaving, we did our part to help protect this cave by packing out every piece of trash we found, mostly discarded plastic water bottles. Every little bit helps keep these underground places wild for future generations.
