**A Dog Lost for 45 Years Finally Comes Home | Winder’s Story**

While exploring a pit cave in Alabama with a 30-foot entrance drop, our lights hit something resting quietly on the floor: a dog’s skull and a weathered leather collar. What began as an ordinary vertical caving trip quickly turned into an unexpected journey across nearly half a century.

Stamped into the worn leather were the owners name, an old rural route address that no longer existed, and a phone number that had been out of service for decades. Determined to piece together what happened, I shared a photo of the collar on social media to see if community connections could crack the trail.

Within just 24 hours, the dog had a name and a family.

The dog was a coonhound named Winder, and he vanished 45 years ago at five years old. His owner, Donald Higdon, spent decades convinced Winder had been stolen as a stranger had tried to buy him just days before he disappeared. Donald searched, waited, and wondered for the rest of his life, passing away without ever knowing what truly happened to his prized dog.

His children and grandchildren, however, grew up listening to stories about Winder.

A few days later, I met up with two of Donald’s children, one of his grandchildren, and a lifelong friend who had hunted with Donald and spent weeks searching the woods for Winder four decades earlier. Together, we walked the ridgeline back to the sinkhole. I rigged the rope, rappelled into the 30-foot pit, and carefully recovered Winder’s skull and collar so he could finally leave that dark room behind.

Meeting Donald’s family revealed an even deeper connection: Donald had hand-crafted every single collar for his dogs from scratch. That piece of weathered leather wasn't just identification; it was hand-tooled by the man who loved him, preserved in the cave until it could be placed back into his children's hands.

Winder will now finally been laid to rest alongside Donald's other coonhounds, bringing four decades of uncertainty to an end. Sometimes the most profound things we find underground have nothing to do with mapping or exploring passage, they’re about bringing closure to the surface.

Rest easy, Winder. You're finally home.. ❤️
