We Found the Legendary "Super Formation" Inside this Alabama Cave!

Join Jason, Angel, and me as we head into Alabama in search of a legendary cave formation known as the “Super Formation.”
Our adventure began with a one-mile hike to a dramatic 50-foot-high bluff entrance, complete with a small waterfall cascading down into the sinkhole. Once inside, the cave immediately opens into towering canyon passage, some nearly 60 feet high, before splitting in two directions not far from the entrance. We chose the longer route first, determined to find the formation we had heard about from longtime cavers who visited decades ago.
The journey was anything but simple for a horizontal cave. We traversed across a 30-foot-deep canyon, carefully placing each step to avoid a dangerous fall. After crossing the canyon, we came upon an area once used by saltpeter miners in the 1860s. Evidence of their presence still remains, tally marks etched into the walls and even signatures left behind by the men who once labored there more than a century ago.
And then, we found it.
The Super Formation...
A breathtaking 60-foot-tall column, about six feet around, shaped like a giant 20-dipper ice cream cone rising from a crystal-clear pool. Curtains of delicate “bacon” drape the lower back side. The top glows a dull crimson, fading into lighter shades below, beige, then finally milky white near the base. Many say it’s impossible to capture the entire formation in a single photo… but we managed to do just that.
What an unforgettable day underground in Alabama.
