We Found an Ancient Seabed in the Middle of Tennessee

Come along with us as we explore a unique Tennessee cave that holds clues to an ancient seabed hidden deep underground. Inside, we discover clear evidence that this cave was once beneath the ocean as marine fossils and fossilized sea worm tubes are preserved in the rock.

This cave also played a role in early American history. During the Civil War era, it was mined for saltpeter, and evidence suggests the saltpeter vats may have been set on fire, possibly when the operation was discovered by Union soldiers.

The cave’s written narrative mentions a 500-foot crawl with only 5 inches of airspace, but what we encountered was far longer, closer to 1,500 feet, with significantly more airspace than expected. To reach the deeper sections, we navigated a breakdown-filled crawl known as the Can Opener, which funnels down to a tight squeeze that filters access to the rest of the cave. From there, we explored both upper and lower levels of this 10,000+ foot cave.

As always, locations are not disclosed, explore responsibly and protect these fragile places.
