We Discovered a New Cave in Alabama!

After our last ridge walk in Alabama, we knew we weren’t finished. Same ridge. Same contact zone. Same quiet hope that the mountain might finally give something up.

Join me, Jason, Robby, and Danny as we head back into the Alabama cove to keep searching that sweet spot, where the sandstone cap meets the limestone below and caves are born.

Just a few hours into the hike, Jason notices something most people would walk right past… an obscure rock with the faintest hint of possibility beneath it. He peeks underneath, as there is a small dark hole. Nothing dramatic. Nothing obvious. Just a tight, unassuming opening.

He drops a rock in. And it goes.

That sound every caver waits for.

Not a thud.

Not a bounce.

But space.

What followed wasn’t glamorous. No big entrance. No dramatic drop. Just 90 minutes of digging. Moving rock. Clearing dirt. Taking turns. Widening inches at a time until finally it was big enough to commit. And that moment… when you’re the first one to slide into something that hasn’t been entered before? That’s why we ridge walk.

Does it open up?

Does it shut down?

Was it worth an hour and a half of digging?
