This Tennessee Pit Shouldn't Exist

Join Jason and I on his BIRTHDAY as we head out to explore a truly unique pit here in the TAG (Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia) region. This 100-foot drop is located in Tennessee and is formed entirely in sandstone, something you just don’t see often around here, as the majority of our caves develop in limestone.

Even getting to the pit was an adventure, navigating through a maze of fallen trees that made the approach just as memorable as the cave itself. The rappel starts off with a bit of a thrill too, you have to ease your way over a “diving board” style rock that juts out over the pit. It definitely looks a little intimidating when you’re climbing back up!

Once we made it in, we were treated to an incredible skylight effect from a second entrance, with sunbeams pouring down into the pit, one of those moments that makes you stop and take it all in.

What makes this cave even more interesting is that the adventure doesn’t stop at the bottom. Inside, there’s a second pit that takes you even deeper to a lower level, where we discover some really unique formations you won’t typically find in your average Tennessee cave. Down there, the cave takes on a completely different feel, almost more like a mine than a natural cave, adding to the uniqueness of the experience.

Come along as we celebrate underground, take on this rare formation, and experience a different side of caving in the Southeast!
