Come along as Jason and I visit one of our favorite landowner's property to go check another 100 plus foot vertical pit off our list. Marion County has 38 pits that are over 100 feet deep and Jason only has three left to do.
This particular pit is rarely visited and was dug open in 2004 by our good friends, Harold & Cindy. Not many people visit this pit due to its remote location so it may have been at least 10 years since anyone has visited. Once we arrived at the cave, we found that the entrance had changed and a lot of debris and dirt had filled it in partially. We called Harold to confirm we were in the correct location and everything matched. The cave was blowing air as well.
Unfortunately, we were not able to dig it back open on this day as we did not bring any tools with us, although I had the thought to bring a shovel and Jason had the thought to bring a rock hammer, but we both FORGOT them! And it would be too much work to try and dig it open by hand so we will return better prepared next time.
It wasn't a complete bust of a day as we then drove further into the cove to look for Morels mushrooms and visit another really cool pit with a natural bridge entrance. It ended up being a great day to be outdoors in Tennessee, even with our Blackberry Winter weather.
