Tennessee Cave Tells Stories of War, Worship, and Outlaw Legends

Join us on a special visit to a remarkable cave located within Alvin C. York State Park near Pall Mall, Tennessee. This trip was made possible through special access arranged during a local caving event known as the SERA Summer Cave Carnival. This years event was hosted by the East Tennessee Grotto at East Fork Stables in Jamestown, TN. Please note a permit is required for visitation outside of this event.
This cave holds rich history that stretches back to before the Civil War. It's believed that Native Americans may have once used this site long before it became a major source of saltpeter mining in the 1860's. Over 20 saltpeter vats have been documented inside the cave, offering a fascinating glimpse into its past.
Later, the cave took on a new role in local history when it was used as a church by Billy Dean Anderson, a controversial figure with deep Tennessee roots. Anderson (1934–1979) was a convicted criminal whose life included prison escapes and armed robbery, landing him on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list in 1975. Despite his criminal past, Anderson became something of a folk hero to locals. He had once volunteered as a preacher at Wolf River Methodist Church at just 18 years old, and he later held congregation inside this very cave. It's rumored that he carved the image of Jesus on the cave wall, one of several artistic works he left behind.
