Today’s video is a little different than what we normally do. Most of the time, we’re out exploring caves, showing you the beauty underground, and sharing what we love about caving, especially here in Tennessee. But this time… we were contacted about something much heavier.
Jason and I were recently reached out to by a special investigator with the Grundy County District Attorney’s Office regarding a cold case. A missing person. A man named Josh Day.
This case hits close to home for us.
Josh went missing on July 24, 2020, in Grundy County, in the Fiery Gizzard, an area we know well and have spent years exploring.
For those who don’t know, the Fiery Gizzard in Tennessee is a strenuous, highly rated 13-20 mile loop hike featuring waterfalls, cascades, rocky gorges, and scenic overlooks. Located in Grundy Forest/South Cumberland State Park, it is widely considered one of the best hiking trails in the country and has over 12,000 acres of forested area. It is beautiful, but it can also be unforgiving.
Josh Day was 32 years old. hen he went missing he was out riding four wheelers with two friends near Raven's Point in the Fiery Gizzard area. Josh's Mom, Cindy Day, said that the day Josh wet missing, he had canceled plans to go camping with his dad and told his parents he was going to meet up with some friends instead. She said, "Josh, your daddy is going to be so disappointed, he wanted you to go camping with him." He said, "I know Mom, I have this one thing I have to do, and I can't get out of it."
At some point that night, something happened to Josh. His friends reported that he never came back.
Search crews responded quickly, with the help of several agencies, search and rescue k9's, cadaver k9's, volunteers, and aviation units. Josh's tan Honda Recon was found about 50 yards off the Fiery Gizzard trail next to a small makeshift campsite.
The sheriff said that Josh's friends took a polygraph test but would not elaborate on whether or not they may have had involvement.
Josh was an avid outdoorsman who was familiar with the area. His siter said he would have never left the four wheeler out there alone.
Josh's Mom has told news outlets that she does not expect to find her son alive, but she just wants to bring her son home.
To this day, there have been no confirmed sightings, no clear trail, and no resolution.
And since that night, Josh has never been found.
Come along with us as we hike out to the area near where Josh was last scene to check two known caves, one of them being a 70 foot Sandstone Fissure in search for any remains of Josh.
