The Secret Cave No One Knows About

After work on a Friday evening, Jason and I loaded up on the 4 wheeler and headed down into the cove behind our house with one goal in mind… finally begin surveying a secret cave we’ve known about for years.
We’ve owned this property for over 12 years and built our home here nearly 9 years ago. Over the years, we’ve visited this cave a handful of times and always knew it deserved a proper survey. Right now, the cave is listed as a 40-foot pit with roughly 600 feet of known passage.
After down into the cove, we parked the 4 wheeler and hiked nearly a mile through the woods to reach the entrance. The cave sits directly beside the creek bed, with a beautiful waterfall pouring straight into the pit before disappearing underground beneath the valley floor. The heavy overgrowth around the entrance made it obvious that very few people even know this cave exists… much less actually visit it.
Armed with our BRIC5 survey tool and tablet, we started documenting passage little by little and slowly piecing the cave together. Even though we made great progress, getting a late start after work meant we couldn’t finish the survey on this trip… which just gives us another reason to come back.
While exploring the cave, we stumbled across mysterious bones and even encountered a snake inside the cave. Seeing bones in a place this remote definitely made us stop and wonder what they once belonged to.. Maybe a cow, maybe human? But how did a Cow get here? It only left us with more questions than answers.
As darkness settled over the mountains, we turned off our lights near the entrance and were amazed to discover glowworms shining all around the pit. At first, you couldn’t see anything, but after letting our eyes adjust to the total darkness, tiny glowing lights slowly appeared everywhere around us. It was one of those rare moments underground that felt almost unreal.
