Epic Journey to a Massive Underground Lake in Mexico

Join Jason and me on an unforgettable caving adventure deep in the jungle of Quintana Roo, Mexico. This trip took us 2 kilometers into dense rainforest, where we navigated past stinging hornets, poisonous Chechén trees, and Acacia trees armed with large hollow thorns filled with ants.
After reaching the cave entrance, which was hidden inside a jungle sinkhole, we dropped in and followed winding passageways before emerging into another sinkhole. From there, we continued exploring, popping in and out of several more sinkholes as we made our way deeper into the system. All the while, our guide Roberto caving with a machete!
Eventually, we reached the point where we geared up in wetsuits and swam toward a massive underground lake. Along the way, we saw thousands and I mean literally thousands of cave pearls, ancient Mayan altars and artifacts, surreal pools of calcite rafts, and some of the most breathtaking cave formations we’ve ever laid eyes on.
The underground lake itself was enormous, measuring at least 250 x 150 feet. We swam across it to a skylight opening above before following our guide, Roberto, into a new area he wanted to explore. After checking out the new passage, we returned to the main route, swam back through the system, and made our way out of this incredible cave.
This was one of the most extraordinary cave trips we’ve ever done, and we’re excited to bring you along for the journey.
