Do NOT Enter This Cave Without a Net (Swarmed)

g with us as we explore an Alabama cave… along with about 50,000 tiny gnats. Yep, these bugs followed us over a mile underground, drawn to our lights the entire way.

This trip was a special one for our friend Rhiannon, who wanted to take her dad caving. He had been caving when he was much younger but this was going to be a first for them going caving together. She originally reached out to us last spring while working on a documentary for her Capstone project, so it was awesome to reconnect and get her back underground, this time with her dad by her side.

From the moment we reached the entrance, the bugs were already waiting. As we entered one by one, they swarmed our lights and refused to leave. We stopped multiple times, even turning off our lights to try and lose them, but no luck. They just kept coming back.

Despite the unexpected tag-alongs, this cave did not disappoint. It’s highly decorated, and along the way we took time to check out some incredible formations.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to cave with thousands of bugs… this is the trip for you.
