Come along with us as we explore this local Marion County, Tennessee Cave that is rumored to connect to another nearby cave that has been lost for decades. These caves were once explored by a local Sewanee Physician, Henry T. Kirby Smith in the 1940's. He wrote about these two caves in his journal and had suspected that they connected but was never successful in doing so. In the 1960's modern day cavers were not able to find one of the entrances he wrote about so it was considered lost for many more decades until cavers were eventually able to connect them in 2011. It was also suspected that when the State of Tennessee built Interstate 24 that the entrance was filled in and it was covered up.
On this trip, we push and route find our way through a lot of mazy breakdown following air and eventually find our way on through to the hidden cave. We were able to re connect the two caves and discovered a large room full of historic signatures that is like a hidden time capsule just waiting to be discovered again. The earliest signatures we could find were from the 1860's and the latest were from 1949.
