Black Friday Caving in One of Tennessee's Most Beautiful Caves

Come along with us as we visit one of Tennessee's most spectacular caves, Cumberland Caverns for some Black Friday Caving! Modern day Cavers have been exploring Cumberland Caverns since the early 1940's and it is the longest Show Cave in Tennessee with just over 27 miles of known cave passage. On this trip, we explore many passages including Virgin Ave, Davis Dome, Crystal Chasm, and the Sewing Room. We also see bones from a Lynx that made its way into this cave thousands of years ago and some fossilized sharks teeth.

The historic entrance to Cumberland Caverns (Higginbotham Cave) was first discovered around 1810 by an early settler, Aaron Higginbotham. By the 1860's at least two miles of cave had been explored by the local tax collector, Shelah waters. One of the other nearby entrances, Henshaw Cave, which was later connected to Cumberland Caverns was mined for saltpeter during the Civil War.

Modern day cavers began exploring Cumberland Caverns in the 1940's and 1950's. Many discoveries were made during this time including crossing of Devil's quarry, McCrady Canyon, Monument Pillar, the Waterfall Room, Fort's Gallery and the Onyx Curtain entrance, and the connection between the Higginbotham and Henshaw entrances. In 1956, Roy Davis and others discovered the Great Extension that included more than 6 miles of cave passage with the Grand Hall, Virgin Avenue, and the Crystal Palace.

Cumberland Caverns officially opened for tours in 1956 under the management of Roy Davis.

Cumberland Caverns is a complex multi level phreatic cave formed in the lower Monteagle Limestone (Mississippian). Much of the cave is formed beneath the Hartselle-capped benches of Cardwell Mountain. Damp red clay fill is the predominant sediment, particularly in smaller passageways. Numerous second deposits may be found in the cave. Dripstone Formations and Gypsum Flowers, Needles, and Crusts are especially prominent. There is no significant flowing water current in the cave.
