An Alabama Deer Recovery Like No Other in a CAVE!

In this video, my good friend Troy and I answer one of those calls that starts with, “So… we shot a deer and it fell into a hole."
We helped local hunters retrieve an 8-point buck that decided to take a 74-foot plunge into a pit after being shot the morning before. The hunter watched it run off, tumble down into a sinkhole, and literally disappear directly into the hole. After trying an extension ladder (and immediately realizing that was a terrible idea), they wisely called in caver backup.
With proper vertical gear, solid rigging, and a whole lot of teamwork, my good friend Troy and I safely descended into the pit to recover the deer — and somehow managed to do it without either of us barfing, which honestly feels like a win given the circumstances!
What started as a challenging recovery turned into a great night: helping out the local hunting community, making new friends, and even gaining friendly access to a few beautiful caves. Not bad for a pit rescue.
This video shows how caving skills, rope work, and safety training can be valuable far beyond the cave world. It’s also a reminder that pits and caves can be extremely dangerous without the right equipment and experience.
