We Found a Cave in Someone’s Backyard with Bubble Blowing Stalactites!

Join us on a spontaneous caving adventure as my new local caving friend, Ty, takes us to explore two hidden caves in the next town over. The first cave is literally in someone’s backyard, yep, you heard that right! To enter, we descend an old ladder into a narrow entrance littered with decades of lost toys. I can almost hear the heartbreak of kids watching their balls bounce straight into the void, never to be seen again!
Once inside, we discovered signs of a bear wallow and some old bottles and trash that hints at the cave’s long-forgotten past. One of the coolest features of this 500-foot-long cave is the bubble-blowing stalactite. These rare formations occur when internal flow in a soda straw halts briefly while external flow continues, creating a water-filled bubble at the end of the straw. Super fascinating stuff!
The second cave on our list looked promising, but we weren’t quite dressed for the amount of water waiting inside. We’ll definitely be heading back to explore it properly another day!
Subscribe and stay tuned for that return trip—and let us know in the comments if you've ever seen bubble-blowing formations or a cave entrance in someone’s backyard!
