The Surprising Discovery of Ancient Bones while Caving in Missouri

Come along with us as we visit an awesome cave in Perryville, Missouri that has a lot of rimstone dams in a massive river passage. Each year in the fall grottos across this region host an event called Fall MVOR, short for Mississippi Valley Ozark Region. This year it was being hosted by the SEMO (Southeast Missouri) Grotto in Perryville, Missouri. Perryville caves are a lot like our caves back home in Tennessee so we enjoy visiting them a lot but they can also be a bit muddier. The caves in Missouri are also in a sinkhole plain so they do tend to take on a bit more water than some of our caves back home. As dry as we have been, I would have thought this cave would have been more dry but boy was I wrong! As soon as we enter the cave there is what we call an ear dipper and we had to remove our helmets so our faces were not so much in the water.

Shortly after entering the cave, we also discovered some old bones that could be from a white tail deer or some even from a bison! There were also some long pools of water that were waist and up to chest deep on me at times. And not to mention the really cool rimstone dams throughout this passage. This cave has multiple entrances but we went in and out the same one on this trip. The entrance we entered is normally inaccessible due to high water so it must be checked before entering and you do not want to be in this cave if there is any chance of rain.
