How we Mapped Our Newly Discovered Alabama Cave!

A few days after digging open that tight little hole on the Alabama ridge, we knew we had to come back.

When you open a cave that’s never been entered before, the real work is just beginning. This time we returned with survey gear, vertical gear, and the same question every caver asks after a discovery…

How big is it, really?

Join us as we head back to the ridge to begin the first survey of this brand-new cave and start pushing the passages beyond the entrance dig. What started as a tiny, unassuming hole under a rock quickly turned into something!

Right at the entrance, the cave starts off as a pit. On the previous trip when we dug it open, we measured this one at 58 feet deep. But the cave wasn’t finished with us yet.

At the bottom of that first pit, we made our way through a squeezy canyon passage to the top of another drop. While Jason, Robby, and I were finishing up the survey of the first pit and canyon passage, Danny worked on clearing the second drop and setting bolts, giving us a safe anchor so we could continue the push. After rigging the new drop and sending the tape again, the second pit came in at 65 feet deep.

Surveying a new cave is slow, careful work documenting what the mountain has been hiding. But between the stations, we’re always looking ahead… checking every lead to see if the cave wants to keep going.

Will it continue deeper?

Will the passage open up?

Or will the mountain decide this is where it ends?

There’s only one way to find out.

Come underground with us as we return to the cave we dug open and begin the process of turning a small discovery into a mapped cave.
